Puerto Rico General Facts
Puerto Rico is an incorporated territory of the United States of America. It is situated in the north eastern Caribbean Sea between the Dominican Republic and the Virgin Islands. Puerto Rico is an archipelago whose largest islands are Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra, and Mona.
Puerto Rico became part of the US in the end of the 19th century. As a result of the Spanish-American War in 1898 the islands were conquered and later ceded by Spain. In the first half century the archipelago was under military rule. In 1947 Puerto Rico was granted commonwealth state and the right to govern itself. Today, the island has a governor and elected legislative body.
The island has a population of almost 4 million people. Most of them arrived as immigrant sin the 19th century form France, Corsica, Lebanon, China, Spain and Portugal. Later, another wave of European Catholics came to the island from Germany, Spanish loyalists from South America, Italy, Scotland, and Ireland. In recent times there were big immigration waves from other Latin American countries. A lot of Puerto Ricans immigrated to the US in the economic crisis following the World War II. Many of those settled in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Florida. The majority of the current day population of the islands is white- 80.5%, and the rest 19.5% non-white.
The official languages in Puerto Rico are Spanish first and second English. The local Spanish has been strongly influenced by the Spanish immigrants from the Canary Islands, African slaves and indigenous vocabulary. Contemporary American English has left its mark on the language as well. Puerto Rico is historically a religious Catholic territory.
Puerto Rican culture is a mixture of European- mostly Spanish, African, North American, Taino (indigenous) influences. Music takes an important place in the local culture.
